Self-harm in the general hospital

Navneet Kapur is Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry and Head of Research at the Centre for Suicide Prevention, University of Manchester, Manchester, UK. His research interests include the epidemiology, aetiology and treatment of suicidal behaviour.

Abstract 

Self-harm is a major public health problem and makes up a large proportion of the workload of many departments of consultation-liaison psychiatry. This paper focuses on self-harm from a general hospital perspective. It discusses the epidemiology of self-harm, hospital services, recent guidance, assessment, management and prevention.
